A Domino renewal is the annual renewal of your HCL Domino term licenses, or of subscription and support on perpetual licenses, which keeps you entitled to support, fixes and new versions. HCL now licenses Domino per authorized user under the Complete Collaboration (CCB) model, and older CAL, PVU and Collaboration Express licenses lost support on June 11, 2025, so many organizations must re-license at their next renewal. A renewal is also the best moment to remove unused users and right size what you pay for.
RockTeam handles Domino renewals and licensing reviews alongside our Domino consulting and support services, and our software licensing renewals and cost optimization practice covers your wider software estate.
| License | Who it covers | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Complete Collaboration Business Edition (CCB) | Internal employees and business to consumer users | Full Domino features, applications and updates; per authorized user |
| Complete Collaboration External User (CCX) | Business to business users such as partners and suppliers | Access to Domino applications for external organizations |
| Messaging Express | Mail-only users | Mail features without general access to Domino applications |
| Complete Collaboration Solution Partner Edition (CCS) | Independent software vendors and solution providers | For partners delivering solutions built on Domino |
HCL recommends term licensing, and has said that CCB is the only license entitling customers to all Domino features and updates. Check your current HCL license information documents for the exact entitlements in your contract.
Domino Enterprise and Messaging CALs and PVUs, and Domino Collaboration Express, reached end of support on June 11, 2025. To stay on HCL support you re-license to CCB term and/or Messaging Express term at your next renewal, and run a supported Domino version. If your contracts still list these older parts, plan the conversion before the renewal date rather than at it. Version support is covered in our HCL Domino upgrade guide.
| Cause | What happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Inactive users | Departed staff and test IDs stay licensed | Directory cleanup before the count |
| Wrong license type | Mail-only or external users on full CCB | Reclassify to Messaging Express or CCX |
| Fragmented contracts | Several agreements, dates and parts | Consolidate and co-term |
| Old license parts | Unsupported parts renewed or left to lapse | Convert to CCB or Messaging Express term |
| No ongoing tracking | Counts only reviewed at renewal | Use the license dashboard and quarterly reviews |
Access to new Domino versions depends on active term licenses or subscription and support, so check entitlements before an upgrade. During a migration off Domino, users who keep using Domino applications still need licenses until those applications are retired. See the Domino migration playbook for how licensing fits a stay, modernize or migrate decision.
